Public Transport

Smailholm is far less well served by public transport than it was in Victorian times, when there was coach travel to and from Edinburgh every day, and train stations at Earlston, Kelso and Fans.

The village is now served only by a pre-bookable taxibus, Service 902, which goes from Smailholm, opposite the church, at approx 9.30 am. Monday to Friday, to Kelso, arriving approx. 10.00 am.

This service only runs when you book your journey in advance. To book, telephone Scottish Borders Council on 01835 826753 Mondays to Fridays between 08.30 am. and 16.00 pm. Monday morning journeys must be booked the previous Friday.

Departure times from Smailholm can vary, depending on bookings from the other villages (Hume, Nenthorn, Newton Don, and Stichill) on the circuit, so it is advisable to check at the time of booking what time the bus is likely to arrive.

The taxibus returns from the new Kelso bus stance at 12.20 pm.

There is also a School Bus, Service 66, which runs on school days between Kelso and Earlston, via Stichill and Smailholm. The operator is Peter Hogg, 01835 863755.
